Our School

St Aloysius School is a welcoming inclusive community where parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child's learning. The educational program at St Aloysius school takes into account different student strengths and challenges and provides resources to address equity. The curriculum is planned and implemented in accordance with the principles of inclusion. We actively engage our school community in student learning through fostering links within the community and encourage dialogue on student learning. We work closely with our school families supported by our School Advisory Council, Parents and Friends, parent/teacher meetings and via out Newsletters and special events.

Governance

​St Aloysius School is located in the Diocese of Ballarat and is governed by the Diocese of Ballarat Catholic Education Limited (DOBCEL). 

A comprehensive list of policies are available through the school office with key policies as published on the school website. Many of the policies and procedures relating to St Aloysius school are provided by DOBCEL. ST Aloysius’ communicates new and revised public policies via the website and school newsletter. St Aloysius’ leadership review and approve internal management policies and procedures on a regular basis.

School Overview

Established in 1876, and moved to its present site in Redan in 1882, St Aloysius Parish Primary School has a long and proud tradition of serving the educational and spiritual needs of this community and beyond.

Originally staffed by the laity, the Loreto sisters took over the running of the school for the majority of its history until the appointment of the first lay principal in 1997.

With an enrolment of 247 children in 2023, our school is continually celebrating our children's learning and we enjoy strong support of our families and St Aloysius' Parish. Our school facilities are about to have been upgraded with a building program commencing in 2020. We now have wonderful learning areas highlighted by the magnificent and new sports oval.

In recent years, St Aloysius' School has committed to the strengthening of its curriculum and nurturing of relationships throughout the school community. This commitment has led to considerable time and effort into building social skills amongst the student population, whilst extending their cognitive development through the Inquiry Curriculum, complementing the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Religious Education.

Supported by the Federal Government funding through the School Chaplaincy initiative, St Aloysius' has embarked on an ambitious program to improve the social skills and personal resilience of students to support their academic learning. Coupled with rigorous assessments and attention to the individual learning needs of students, the support of the school community in nurturing the students to become active and reliable citizens of Australia is critical to the goals of this school. St Aloysius' School is currently working with the MacKillop Institude in implementing the ReLATE program.

St Aloysius' School has a vibrant and dedicated 'Wellbeing Team' that monitors all children and their participation in any class or programmed support programs, including Seasons for Growth, Smiling Minds and Peaceful Kids. This team reports directly to school leadership and is a great support to all families.

At St Aloysius’ we recognise the vital role of all staff in contributing to the development, wellbeing and learning outcomes for all students at St Aloysius’. At St Aloysius we are proud to have a dedicated staff team of teaching, administrative and support staff.

With recent changes in the demographics of the Redan area, we have a wonderful mix of cultures and socio-economic groups, creating a friendly, welcoming and engaging school community.

St Aloysius Gonzaga Patron Saint of our School and the St Aloysius’ Parish

St. Aloysius was the eldest son of the Marquis Gonzaga, an Italian noble.  His father expected him to become a great soldier but Aloysius had other ideas.  He became a student with the Jesuit Order.  In 1591 a terrible plague broke out in Rome.  The Jesuits opened a hospital of their own and Aloysius helped to tend the sick.  He caught the plague and after much suffering died on June 21st, 1591. 

St. Aloysius Gonzaga was canonized on December 31, 1726, Rome, Italy by Pope Benedict XIII. His relics are entombed under the altar of Saint Ignatius Church in Rome. St. Aloysius is the Patron Saint of Youth.
